The numbers of
organisations, initials, and individuals associated with our industry training
can be quite confusing. We are all
from our own perspective trying to make our industries a safer place to work for
the professional workers in the industry, and its clients. We hope
these short description of each of the organisations will help sort some of that
confusion out.
AWUNZ
Amalgamated
Workers Union New Zealand. The
Union which is and has been fighting for height workers rights for more years than we care
to remember.
Has been representing the workers since the beginning of the debate on
National Qualifications, and has been fighting for the recognition of our work
as a trade for more than fifty years. Has a seat on the Management Committee of
SRIIT as of right. IRAANZ
Industrial Rope Access Association of New Zealand. An
organisation set up to organise training within its own industry. Given the
general similar nature of the work they chose to join up with us on the training
and skill recognition issues. Has a seat on the Management Committee of SRIIT as
of right. NZQA New Zealand Qualifications Authority. Has the
general job of managing all Unit Standards for all Industries and maintaining
the Qualifications Framework. Registers all individual trainees and issues
National Certificates.
OTTO Opportunity the Training Organisation. Was the Power Crane Association ITO. Opportunity Training is now recognised by the Tertiary Education Commission as the organisation responsible for Rigging, Scaffolding, and Industrial Rope Access training as well as the Crane Training it has had responsibility for for many years. Opportunity Training uses SRIIT as it advisory group in this area. OTTO has the delegated authority to issue Certificates of Competence for Scaffolding. OSH
Occupational Safety and Health a division of the Department of Labour. OSH has now disappeared and is now known again as the DOL or Department of Labour. The DOL has the legal right to issue all Certificates of Competence. That delegated authority was held by the BCITO but is now held by OTTO and all Certificates of Competence are issued by them. Crane Association of New Zealand The Crane Industry Employers Organisation in New Zealand. Has a seat on the Management Committee of SRIIT as of right. Has reciprocal membership of SARNZ Inc and SRIIT. SARNZ Inc Scaffolding and Rigging New Zealand Incorporated. The only Employer group for Scaffolding and Rigging Companies in New Zealand. SARNZ was set up in 1994/95 as the vehicle to get the National Certificate system under way. Has reciprocal membership of PCA. SARNZ
Inc and IRAANZ have similar aims in different branches of the Industry and are
looking at ways they can work closer together. They could at some stage in the
future officially merge in some way. Has a seat on the Management Committee of
SRIIT as of right. SRIIT Scaffolding, Rigging and Industrial Rope Access Industry Training Incorporated. Started
life as SARNZ-ITB Industry Training Board,
but voted itself out of existence in May 2000 to become SRIIT and look after our
own training after finally getting divorced from BCITO. The only organisation representing all sectors of the Industry in New Zealand. Membership is open to any person or organisation with an interest in our industry training. AWUNZ, Eng Corp, Power Crane Association, SARNZ Inc, IRAANZ, and the Polytechnic Association each have a seat on the Management Committee as of right, and any member of SRIIT from the general industry may be nominated to the Board. Major
role at the moment is to advise/assist Opportunity Training in the administration of our Unit
Standards. Also exist to lobby various Government Departments on behalf of
our industry. Tai Poutini Tai Poutini Polytechnic. Based in Greymouth on the West Coast and currently carries out the bulk of Scaffold, Rigging, and Rope Access Training in New Zealand. Also has some involvement with Rope Training in Australia. Head of Department is Peter O'Sullivan who is the Polytechnic Association Rep on SRIIT, but the public face of Tai Poutini that most of you will know is either Vaughan Temata or Peter Chapman. Vaughan and Peter are employees of Tai Poutini dealing directly with Trainees and Employers in arranging training agreements and the general administration of them. Peter is head of scaffold and rigging training. Tai Poutini currently run permanent Scaffolding Schools in Christchurch and Auckland and are looking at setting up others if the demand is there. Each
of the above organisations operates in its own right and it is important not to
mix the input it may have with SRIIT with the work it is doing in its own right.
The individual organisations also interact with
each other directly and not through SRIIT at all. SRIIT is the organisation
which tries to keep everyone going in the same direction. Sometimes it almost
works. An Organisation Chart can be downloaded by clicking here |
